Step by step instructions for learning to make layups.
Summary

RIGHT-HANDED PLAYERS SHOOTING FROM THE RIGHT SIDE

ROUND 1

No basket.

1.  From a stationary position practice raising your right leg and your right elbow up at the same time.

2.  Next, continue to raise the right leg and elbow at the same time and add a hop as you bring the leg up.

3.  Focus on driving the leg up. This is what generates the power for your layup as you jump up towards the basket.

4.  Add a ball. Hold the ball with two hands near your right hip. As you bring your leg up bring the ball up to the right side of your head.

5.  Now move to a wall. Step with the left foot, bring the right foot and elbow up and shoot the ball off the wall, reaching high on the release.

6.  Next repeat the above step using two steps. Right step, left step, bring the right leg and the right elbow up and shoot the ball off the wall.

7.  Add a dribble. Dribble once with your right hand and step with your right leg, then your left leg, then bring the right leg and the right elbow up and shoot the ball off the wall.

ROUND 2

Move to a basket.

1.  Start with your left foot just inside the block and your right foot slightly forward of the left foot.

2.  Step back with your right foot then bring it forward and lift your right leg as you push off the left foot / leg.  Bring the ball up and aim for the top right corner of the box, releasing your shot with the right hand.

3.  Repeat step 6 and 7 above, shooting at the basket.

NOTE: Many young players fly past the basket when they jump to shoot the layup. Focus on using a vertical high jump (up towards the basket) rather than a horizonal long jump (away and past the basket).
