Overview: Unlike most rebounding drills that start with players already contacting the opponent, this drill focuses on perimeter box outs, using a Tag & Go technique. Rebounding is about positioning yourself to keep your opponent from getting the ball then locating the ball, anticipating where it will land, and going hard to get the ball.
3 players are positioned on the perimeter at the 3 -point line.
3 defensive players are positioned in the lane.
Play begins with a coach passing to one of the perimeter players.
All 3 defenders close out.
The receiver shoots immediately on the catch.
All 3 defenders boxout using a Tag & Go technique.
After initiating contact, the defenders locate the ball, anticipate where it will be and move to the ball, securing the ball.
On the release of the shot, the offensive players try to get the ball, using speed, swim moves and other techniques to beat the defender to the ball.
Play is live until somebody scores. Whoever secures the ball can score immediately.
Safe, physical play is encouraged.
A score is worth 1 point for the team that scores.
VARIATIONS:
LINE: Players in the lane start in a line.
CIRCLE: Players in the lane moving clockwise until the pass is made (more difficult and requires more communication).
ZONE: Boxing out from a zone is difficult. Players start in a simulated zone – a triangle. 1 at the foul line, 1 at each 2nd hash. On the pass each defender identifies a player to box out, BUT, it cannot be the player right in front of them.
FOCUS:
Fundamental closeouts, under control, hand up, balanced.
Fundamental boxouts – initiate contact, find the ball, pursue the ball.
Communication.
Effort. Mental toughness.
Finish through contact.
